Turin tram passengers panic after thieves use smoke bombs to escape
Panic erupted on a Line 4 tram in Turin on Monday evening near Corso Giulio Cesare when a group of young thieves used firecrackers and smoke bombs to facilitate their escape. The incident occurred around 8:00 PM after the group attempted to steal a mobile phone from a female passenger.
The explosions and dense smoke caused passengers to flee the vehicle in terror, with many spilling out into the street and into oncoming traffic. The tram driver successfully stopped the vehicle and activated safety protocols. While the chaos caused significant distress, no serious injuries or intoxications were reported.
Investigators have seized internal camera footage to identify the suspects, who fled into the Barriera di Milano neighborhood during the confusion. Local officials, including Verangela Marino of FdI, have criticized the incident, calling it unacceptable and highlighting the severe risks posed to public safety on transit lines.
