Turkey accelerates KAAN fifth-generation fighter development
Turkey is advancing the development of its KAAN fifth-generation fighter jet, aiming to create a sovereign alternative to the American F-35. Following its exclusion from the F-35 program and facing CAATSA sanctions after purchasing the Russian S-400 system, Ankara is pursuing a fully domestic project.
KAAN chief engineer Emre Yapan stated that the aircraft is being designed and developed entirely within Turkey, including all components and operating systems. Yapan noted that KAAN aims to join an elite group of nations capable of producing fifth-generation fighters, alongside the United States, Russia, and China, claiming the jet will offer superior air-to-air capabilities and maneuverability.
However, defense experts note that engine development remains a significant challenge. While Turkey has closed the technological gap, experts suggest that propulsion systems continue to be a primary weakness and a reason why Ankara still seeks to negotiate a return to the F-35 program.
