Turkey has issued a sharp condemnation of the European Parliament, accusing EU institutions of acting as ‘tools of Greek Cypriot propaganda.’ The tension follows a recommendation by the European Parliament’s Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality regarding the 2027 EU budget.

The committee proposed allocating EU funds for the construction of a monument in Nicosia dedicated to women and girls who were victims of sexual violence during the 1974 Turkish military intervention in Cyprus. Turkey, which characterizes its 1974 actions as a ‘Peace Operation’ that prevented the destruction of the Turkish Cypriot people, claims the monument is intended to defame the Turkish Armed Forces and distort historical facts.

In response, Cypriot MEP Loukas Fourlas rejected Ankara’s claims, asserting that the initiative aims to honor victims and break a ‘52-year silence’ regarding the dark aspects of the 1974 events. Fourlas emphasized that historical memory and the testimonies of victims do not constitute propaganda and stated that the EU decision is not subject to Turkish approval.
