Turkey accuses Israel of attempting to destabilize Syria

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, during a visit to Syria, accused Israel of attempting to destabilize the country. Fidan identified Israeli policies as a major obstacle to Syria's positive regional trajectory, specifically citing an attack on the Abu al-Doulur airbase in northwestern Syria that rendered it inoperable about a month ago.

Israel justified the strike by alleging Turkey was attempting to establish a presence in the area, a claim Ankara has denied. Syrian Foreign Minister Assaad al-Saibani stated that there is no legal justification for the airbase attack but emphasized that Syria remains committed to a diplomatic solution and that relations between Syria and Turkey remain at an optimal level.

Following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes against Syrian military infrastructure and deployed troops near the UN-monitored buffer zone in the Golan Heights. Damascus also recently protested the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Syrian territory.
