Turkey advances earthquake reconstruction in Hatay and Kahramanmaraş
Reconstruction efforts continue in Turkey's earthquake-affected regions of Hatay and Kahramanmaraş following the devastating February 6, 2023, earthquakes.
In Hatay, the Marangozlar Mosque has opened for worship in the Kırıkhan district, marking the 137th mosque completed in the province since the disaster. According to Hatay Governor Mustafa Masatlı, the reconstruction process—conducted in cooperation with the Presidency of Religious Affairs—has also resulted in the opening of 51 Quran courses and 13 youth centers, with work continuing on 24 additional mosques and 19 Quran courses.
In Kahramanmaraş, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has increased student dormitory capacity to 10,538, surpassing pre-earthquake levels of 9,610. New facilities, including two dormitories at the Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University campus and one in Elbistan, have been constructed to replace those destroyed or heavily damaged. Provincial Youth and Sports Director Yasin Özdemir stated that all students in the city center have now been placed in dormitories, with plans to begin construction on additional facilities in Dulkadiroğlu, Pazarcık, Andırın, and Türkoğlu.
