Turkey: Erdoğan candidacy and EU membership status discussed
Turkish political leaders have signaled support for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to run for office again in the next presidential election. Abdulhamit Gül, Vice President of the AKP parliamentary group, stated that there are no legal or constitutional obstacles to a new candidacy, linking the possibility to ongoing discussions regarding a new Constitution.
Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the MHP and a coalition partner, suggested the general elections could take place on May 14, 2028. Meanwhile, Mehmet Özkum, a senior advisor to Erdoğan, indicated the elections might occur on April 16, 2028, noting that Erdoğan would run for the final time.
Separately, President Erdoğan addressed Turkey's relationship with the European Union in an interview with Al Jazeera. He stated that EU membership is no longer a priority for Turkey, citing the 53-year waiting period. However, he clarified that Turkey has not closed the door to accession, suggesting that the responsibility for the stalemate lies with Europe.
