Crete region experiences successive offshore quakes up to magnitude 5.8

On 20 June 2026 a sequence of earthquakes struck the offshore area of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. The first tremor was recorded at 12:31 UTC with a magnitude of 4.7, followed six minutes later by a 5.3 event. Later that day a stronger 5.8 quake was detected, and at 16:18 a shallower magnitude 3.7 shock occurred 3 km closer to the surface. Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the Kandilli Observatory reported no injuries, fatalities or structural damage from any of the events. The tremors were felt across parts of the Turkish coastline, but authorities confirmed that the offshore location prevented any casualties. A broader daily seismic bulletin also listed numerous smaller quakes throughout Turkey, including the Crete‐area shocks, reinforcing the heightened seismic activity in the region.
