Turkey and Iran discuss counter-terrorism and organized crime cooperation
Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi and Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni met in Ankara to discuss strategic security cooperation. A central focus of the meeting was the 'Terror-Free Turkey' process, which includes the dissolution and disarmament of the PKK/KCK organization. Çiftçi emphasized that the liquidation of PKK branches in Syria and Iraq is a critical threshold for regional peace and urged the inclusion of the PJAK group in Iran in this process to prevent militants from seeking refuge in Iran.
The ministers also addressed combatting organized crime and drug trafficking. Çiftçi reported that in 2026, Turkey conducted 1,592 operations against 562 organized crime groups. Additionally, 38,915 drug-related operations resulted in 32,848 arrests and the seizure of 36 tons of narcotics. Both nations expressed a commitment to strengthening cooperation through Interpol, managing irregular migration, and improving extradition and deportation processes to ensure border security and regional stability.
