Turkey and Iraq plan to extend Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline to Basra

Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar met with Iraqi Oil Minister Basim Muhammed Khudair in Ankara to discuss strengthening energy ties between the two nations. A primary focus of the discussions was the strategic plan to extend the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline to Basra and increase its capacity. This move is intended to provide a reliable alternative to energy supplies from the Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz.

Following a crude oil transport contract signed in August between BOTAŞ, SOMO, and NOC, the two countries are now finalizing a roadmap for a more comprehensive, long-term energy agreement. To accelerate this, joint working groups will be activated to manage projects involving oil and gas infrastructure, exploration, production, refining, petrochemicals, and electricity.

Additionally, Turkey aims to support the Development Road project, envisioning it as a strategic 'energy road' integrated with oil, natural gas, and electricity transmission lines. The partnership also seeks to achieve the goal of exporting 1 million barrels of crude oil daily, as noted by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zeydi, while transforming the port of Ceyhan into a global energy hub.
