Turkey and Iraq agree to Sinjar security plan and base handover

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi reached a significant security and economic agreement during a meeting in New York on September 23, 2026, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

A key component of the accord involves the Sinjar region, where both nations agreed to fully establish Iraqi state authority and eliminate the presence of illegal foreign armed elements. In response to security progress made by Iraq, Turkish forces will gradually hand over the Bashiqa-Zilkan military base to the Iraqi Federal Government according to a predetermined mechanism and timetable.

Beyond security, the leaders committed to deepening strategic ties by expanding bilateral trade and investment. They also agreed to accelerate major strategic projects, most notably the Development Road Project.
