Turkey and Iraq sign one-year oil pipeline deal for 750,000 bpd
Turkey and Iraq have signed a one‑year transit agreement for the Kirkuk‑Ceyhan oil pipeline. The deal was concluded between Turkish state energy firm BOTAS and Iraqi state oil companies SOMO and NOC after meetings between Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar and Iraqi Oil Minister Basim Muhammed Hüdeyir, and following a recent encounter between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi.
The arrangement authorises the daily transport of up to 750,000 barrels of Iraqi crude through the pipeline, which has a maximum capacity of about 1.5 million barrels per day but has been operating at roughly 170,000‑200,000 barrels per day in recent months. The parties say the agreement ensures uninterrupted oil flow, strengthens regional and global energy security, and provides an alternative export route while the Strait of Hormuz remains constrained.
Both governments indicated that the one‑year deal is a step toward a longer‑term framework covering oil, electricity, water resources and other cooperation areas, aiming to boost Iraq’s export revenues and reinforce the strategic energy corridor that has linked the two countries for nearly five decades.
