Turkey and Israel tensions escalate over Syrian military presence
Tensions between Turkey and Israel are escalating, centered on military activity and influence in Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has warned that Ankara will not hesitate to respond decisively if it faces any attack, noting that diplomatic deterrents are being exhausted.
This friction follows the signing of the Mecca Common Defense Agreement by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The pact, which includes military coordination and intelligence sharing, has been described as a significant step toward regional unity by US President Donald Trump, despite potentially reducing reliance on American security guarantees.
Concurrently, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz accused Erdoğan of dragging Turkey into ‘dangerous adventures in Syria’ following an Israeli strike on the Abu al-Duhur airbase. Israel warned Damascus that allowing Turkish forces to station at the base would violate the established security status quo. However, Syrian Foreign Minister Assaad al-Saibani denied these claims, stating there are no plans to host a permanent Turkish military presence at the site.
