Turkey and North Macedonia celebrate 34 years of diplomatic ties

Turkey and North Macedonia are celebrating the 34th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, which were established on August 26, 1992, following North Macedonia's independence. Turkey was among the first nations to recognize the country and its constitutional name, and it has consistently supported North Macedonia's territorial integrity and its integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions.

Recent high-level engagements have strengthened the bilateral bond. Following North Macedonia's entry into NATO in 2020, relations have expanded into new dimensions. Key milestones include a meeting between North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in February 2025, which led to the signing of a joint political declaration to create a High-Level Cooperation Council. Additionally, President Erdoğan met with North Macedonian President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova in Istanbul in April 2026 to discuss cooperation in trade, defense industry, and energy.
