Turkey and Syria advance diplomatic and economic normalization

Turkish Ambassador to Syria, Nuh Yılmaz, has provided updates on the intensifying diplomatic and economic normalization between Turkey and Syria. Discussions regarding a potential visit by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Damascus are currently on the agenda.

On security matters, Yılmaz noted that since December 8, 2024, strategic threats along the border—including human trafficking, drug trafficking, uncontrolled migration, and terrorism—have abruptly diminished. Turkey maintains a firm stance on the complete removal of SDG and PKK/YPG elements from the region to ensure Syria's territorial integrity. Turkey also expressed readiness to support the Syrian army's logistical and equipment needs, citing recent Turkish naval visits to Latakia Port as a sign of growing maritime cooperation.

Economically, bilateral trade has reached $3.75 billion, with a long-term goal of $10 billion. Plans are underway to reactivate border crossings along the 900-kilometer frontier, specifically the Nusaybin-Qamishli line, within three months. Additionally, projects such as a Free Zone and Dry Port in Idlib are being discussed. Cultural and educational cooperation will also expand through the planned opening of an International Turkish School in the Damascus area.
