Turkey and Syria deepen ties as Erdogan plans visit to Damascus

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani are deepening diplomatic, security, and economic ties between Turkey and Syria. During recent meetings in Damascus and Ankara, the two nations discussed establishing a higher coordination council and a comprehensive strategic document to manage cooperation in energy sectors, including gas and electricity grid connectivity.

Fidan announced that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to visit Syria in the near future, marking a significant step in normalizing relations. Fidan also criticized Israeli military actions in the region, claiming that Israel is attempting to destabilize Syria and obstruct its path toward recovery. He specifically cited the targeting of the Abu al-Duhur airbase as an example of such interference.

In response to regional tensions, al-Shaibani emphasized Syria’s commitment to diplomatic solutions and called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from territories encroached upon following the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024. The two countries are also looking to expand cooperation in trade and transportation initiatives.
