Turkey and UN broker new Black Sea ceasefire talks

Turkey and the United Nations have initiated new diplomatic efforts to broker a Black Sea ceasefire aimed at securing grain shipments and stabilizing global food prices. Scheduled for early October, the talks will be mediated by envoys from the Swiss-based NGO, the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue.

The initiative follows a closed-door meeting held during the UN General Assembly in late September, which included representatives from the United States, Europe, India, and Egypt. Discussions have focused on a “narrowly defined and reciprocal arrangement” designed to ensure free commercial navigation and the protection of ports and energy infrastructure.

Ukraine has reportedly received four distinct proposals regarding energy and Black Sea ceasefires from the United States, India, Turkey, and Egypt. The push for a new agreement comes as Russia and Ukraine increase attacks on each other’s Black Sea port facilities. Given that both nations account for more than a quarter of global wheat shipments, these escalations contributed to wheat futures reaching a three-year high in August.
