Turkey and United Kingdom hold sixth round of FTA negotiations
The sixth round of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between Turkey and the United Kingdom took place in London. While a previous agreement entered into force on January 1, 2021, to prevent trade disruptions following Brexit, that version focused primarily on goods. The new negotiations aim for a much broader scope.
Key discussion topics include services trade, investments, digital trade, telecommunications, financial and professional services, public procurement, intellectual property, customs procedures, and environmental sustainability. The digital economy and services are expected to be major differentiators from the existing agreement.
Following the fifth round held in Ankara in June 2026, the British government reported that 11 chapters had been closed. Current discussions are moving into more technical and commercially sensitive areas, such as market access for agricultural and food products, rules of origin, and investment regulations. The negotiations also consider Turkey’s Customs Union relationship with the European Union regarding industrial products and supply chains.
