Turkey animal cruelty video sparks outrage

Footage of a woman brutally killing a turtle has sparked widespread outrage on social media. In the video, which appears to have been filmed in an apartment corridor, the woman is seen stepping on and crushing the animal's shell to win a bet with an accomplice. The recording captures the woman celebrating the animal's death, with comments such as “I am very happy, we finally reached victory” and “It is bleeding, I made it bleed.”

The accomplice in the video is seen encouraging the act, instructing the woman on where to apply pressure to break the shell. Following the viral spread of the video, social media users have called on the Turkish Ministry of Interior and the General Directorate of Security to identify and prosecute the individuals involved.

Under Turkey's Animal Protection Law No. 5199, cruelty to animals is a criminal offense. Following legislative changes in 2021, acts of torture or cruel treatment toward pets or domestic animals can result in prison sentences ranging from six months to three years.
