Turkey aims for healthcare independence through domestic vaccine and drug production
Turkish Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu announced several strategic developments for the nation's healthcare sector. A key highlight is the increase in average life expectancy to 78.5 years, alongside a significant drop in infant mortality rates to 7.8 per thousand births.
To achieve medical independence, Turkey is prioritizing the domestic production of drugs, medical devices, and vaccines. Memişoğlu stated that plans are in place for 8 domestic vaccines, with contracts for at least 6 expected to be signed within weeks. The ministry is also conducting scientific studies on SMA treatments to ensure effective outcomes.
Infrastructure and service models are also evolving. In Istanbul, 79 large hospitals have been constructed over the last 24 years, with new projects like the 4,000-bed Sancaktepe city hospital slated for 2027. Additionally, a new 'palliative critical care service' model has been introduced, integrating home, remote, and palliative care through the newly established Home Health Services Coordination Center (ESKOM).
