Turkey to introduce new divorce and alimony regulations in October
Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek has announced that new legal regulations regarding divorce and alimony are expected to be submitted to Parliament in October. This move follows the Constitutional Court's decision on June 4 to annul the provision for indefinite alimony.
The proposed reforms aim to establish a time-limited alimony system. Under the draft, alimony duration may be calculated as half the length of the marriage, though marriages lasting only 6 months to 1 year could still entitle recipients to at least 5 years of support. Judges will retain discretion to extend alimony for women who are unable to work or are of advanced age. Additionally, the regulation may allow for alimony to be paid in lump sums.
Beyond alimony, the Minister outlined goals to expedite judicial processes. The Ministry aims to complete rent determination cases within 9 months and eviction cases within 1.5 years. Furthermore, Gürlek announced a 50 percent discount on firearm license fees for lawyers, with no fees required for renewals, as part of efforts to strengthen the legal profession.
