Water infrastructure projects advance in Turkey and Cyprus
Various water infrastructure projects are underway across Turkey and Cyprus to address water stress and agricultural needs. In Trabzon, the construction of the Uçarsu Gölet (pond/mini-dam) is progressing in the Akçaabat district. Officials, including Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Metin Genç and State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) General Manager Mehmet Akif Balta, noted that the project aims to provide a sustainable drinking water source to replace previous reliance on water tankers. The project is expected to complete its body by the end of 2026, with water retention planned for 2027, while also boosting local tourism near the Uçarsu Waterfall.
In Gümüşhane, new investments are being prepared to protect settlements from flood risks and boost agriculture, including the Yayladere Valley Rehabilitation and the Ünlüpınar Dam Irrigation Facility. Meanwhile, in Tosya, calls have been made for a clear timeline for the Kızlar Yolu Dam to support rice cultivation targets. In Cyprus, İskele Municipality has completed the renewal of a 5-6 kilometer drinking water line in Mersinlik Village, replacing old asbestos pipes with the support of the Turkish Embassy in Nicosia.
