Turkey diesel price surge hits 80 TL as global oil prices rise
On 25 July 2026 the Turkish government raised the motorin (diesel) price by 4.20 TL per litre. The increase pushed average prices in the three largest cities to 78‑80 TL – 78.48 TL in Istanbul (European side), 79.60 TL in Ankara and 79.87 TL in Izmir – while East‑Turkey stations saw prices above 81 TL.
The hike follows a sharp rise in Brent crude to the US $100‑per‑barrel level, driven by renewed Middle‑East tensions, the US‑Iran conflict and concerns over the Hormuz Strait. Earlier, the government’s “eşel mobil” subsidy programme, launched in March 2025, had offset up to 250 billion TL of fuel tax (ÖTV) and kept diesel near 65‑70 TL per litre. With the subsidy now exhausted, any further increase in global oil or the lira‑dollar exchange will be passed directly to consumers.
Price tables released by fuel distributors show the new tariffs for Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Samsun and other regions. The higher cost has already sparked public discontent, with reports of drivers considering selling cars or switching to alternative fuels. Analysts warn that if the global oil market remains volatile, additional hikes could follow.
