Turkey forest fire investigations lead to 16 arrests

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek has provided an update on judicial investigations regarding forest fires occurring across 27 provinces since June 1, 2026. Out of 103 investigated fires, authorities have identified 70 suspects. Of these, 16 individuals have been arrested, 32 are under judicial control, and two are currently wanted.

In the most recent week between August 30 and September 6, nine new fires were reported, leading to the identification of two suspects, one of whom was arrested. Gürlek emphasized that those responsible for fires through intent or negligence will face justice to protect the nation's forests.

Additionally, a new presidential decree has entered into force to provide financial compensation and monthly pensions to officials and volunteers who are killed, injured, or disabled while fighting forest fires. This regulation extends social security protections to public personnel, municipal teams, and volunteers, ensuring that personal losses and equipment damages are covered under relevant legislation.
