Former Tunceli Governor Tuncay Sonel linked to organized crime in Gülistan Doku case
Turkish prosecutors have carried out simultaneous raids in 15‑16 provinces, detaining 18‑19 suspects connected to the disappearance and murder of university student Gülistan Doku. Eight of those suspects were transferred to the Erzurum court, and prosecutors have asked a judge to keep six of them in pre‑trial detention.
Investigators allege that the operation was directed by former Tunceli governor Tuncay Sonel, who is accused of heading an organized network that included senior police officers, a former police chief and other public officials. The network is said to have tampered with evidence, placed listening devices in homes, installed spyware on phones and used illicit financial transfers, including a claim that Sonel gave 400‑500 thousand Turkish lira in cash to a local businessman.
A letter from Umut Altaş, a suspect held in the United States, alleges that Sonel’s son, Türkay Sonel, participated directly in the killing. The investigation has so far resulted in the detention of at least 16 people, with further arrests expected as the case proceeds.
