Turkey arrests over 200 suspected extremists in nationwide crackdown
On 24 June 2026 Turkish police carried out a raid near Sazagasi, about 80 km south of Ankara, that ended in a gunfight in which a man suspected of links to the Islamic State was killed and his partner was wounded and arrested. Security forces reported more than 200 arrests of suspected extremists on the same day.
A separate anti‑terror operation across Turkey resulted in the detention of 209 people and the issuance of 241 arrest warrants. The round‑up comes amid heightened security measures and recent restrictions on public gatherings ahead of a NATO summit scheduled for early July.
Both actions reflect Turkey’s intensified campaign against jihadist networks and have sparked mixed reactions locally, with some community members questioning the authorities’ information while others view the operations as necessary for national safety.
