Turkey arrests over 600 during NATO summit security crackdown

During the NATO summit held in Ankara on July 7‑8, Turkish authorities imposed extensive security measures, banning public demonstrations in the capital and several other provinces. The crackdown led to the arrest and detention of hundreds of protesters and journalists.

According to a report compiled by the “Justice for Lawyers” coalition, at least 668 people were detained nationwide and 179 were formally arrested. The report cites mass house raids that targeted students, lawyers and political party members, and notes that detainees in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district were subjected to harsh treatment, including the use of leg restraints. Travel restrictions were also imposed around Esenboğa Airport and major roads, affecting daily life and the summit delegation.

The report alleges that the security response far exceeded normal limits, raising concerns about violations of fundamental rights during the summit.
