Turkey car rental regulations to impact second-hand market
New regulations in Turkey's car rental sector are expected to significantly impact the second-hand vehicle market by 2027. Approximately 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles from daily rental fleets are projected to exit the rental sector due to new age and mileage limits. This influx of high-mileage, heavily used vehicles is expected to increase supply and drive price competition in the second-hand market.
Experts warn that while these vehicles may offer a price advantage, buyers must exercise caution. Inspection specialists emphasize the importance of verifying vehicle history through insurance records and conducting detailed technical inspections. Key areas of concern include chassis integrity, airbag deployment, and engine components such as turbochargers and injectors, as sellers may use misleading terms like “accident-free” or “service-maintained” to mask significant wear or previous damage.
Small-scale rental businesses are expected to be more heavily affected by the new requirements, which include mandatory periodic maintenance and specific insurance coverage. While the influx of fleet vehicles could provide cheaper options for consumers, the intensive usage patterns of rental cars necessitate rigorous scrutiny of maintenance logs and mechanical condition.
