Turkey bans nighttime access to 21 Mediterranean beaches to protect sea turtles

Turkey has introduced strict nighttime restrictions on 21 Mediterranean beaches across the provinces of Antalya, Muğla, Mersin, Adana and Hatay. From 20:00 to 08:00 visitors are prohibited from walking on the sand, camping, using vehicles, lighting fires or barbecuing. The measures, which apply through the nesting season from May to the end of September, aim to safeguard the nesting of the endangered Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas sea turtles. Violations can attract fines of up to 699 245 Turkish lira (about €13 000 or 55 500 PLN). Daytime beach use remains permitted. Enforcement will be carried out by local authorities and environmental services during the peak tourist period.

The regulation is expected to affect both domestic and foreign tourists, including visitors from Poland, who must adhere to the new rules while enjoying the popular resorts of Patara, Belek, Fethiye and others.
