Turkey begins expiration period for first generation chip ID cards
The first generation of chip-based identity cards in Turkey, which began distribution on January 2, 2017, is approaching its 10-year validity limit. The expiration process will begin in 2027, with cards expiring sequentially based on their individual issuance dates.
Citizens are advised to check the expiration date on the back of their cards. Once the 10-year period ends, the cards are considered invalid and are not automatically renewed. To avoid service disruptions, individuals must apply for renewal through the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs.
Applications can be made by appointment via the official website or the ALO 199 call center, or by visiting population directorates without an appointment. Individuals aged 15 and older must apply in person to provide biometric data, including fingerprints and vein patterns. Requirements for renewal include a valid official photo ID and one biometric photograph taken within the last six months that meets international ICAO standards.
