Turkey conducts mass raids on LGBTQ+ groups and activists FAST-MOVING
Turkish authorities have launched a large-scale crackdown on LGBTQ+ organizations and activists across 15 provinces, including Istanbul and Ankara. The operations, part of a government campaign titled ‘My Family is Safe,’ are aligned with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ‘Decade of the Family’ initiative, which aims to promote traditional family values and address declining birth rates.
Justice Minister Akin Gürlek announced that judicial proceedings have been initiated against 162 suspects, nine associations, and 13 businesses. Prosecutors allege involvement in activities related to prostitution, obscenity, and the improper influence of minors regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. During the raids, police reported seizing drugs, digital equipment, smuggled alcohol, and firearms.
Reports on the number of detainees vary. While official sources cited 26 to 47 detainees, the LGBTQ+ rights group Kaos GL reported that at least 50 activists were detained, including more than 10 individuals taken during raids on their private residences. Additionally, authorities have blocked access to dozens of websites and social media accounts belonging to LGBTQ+ organizations, activists, and human rights defenders.
Human rights organizations, including the Turkish Human Rights Association, have condemned the actions, describing them as state-led discrimination and a political operation intended to dismantle civil society and force a monolithic family model on the population.
