Turkey blocks dozens of LGBT and feminist groups' X accounts
Turkish authorities ordered the social‑media platform X to block roughly 40 accounts belonging to LGBT+ and feminist organisations, invoking national security and public order concerns under law No. 5651. Rights groups, including the monitoring NGO Engelliweb and a coalition of 22 organisations such as Amnesty International’s Turkish branch, condemned the decision as "an extremely serious and disproportionate infringement of free speech" and said it hinders LGBT+ people’s rights during Pride Month.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly targeted the LGBT+ community, blaming it for falling birth rates and describing it as "deviant behaviour" contrary to human nature. The account blocks come amid a pattern of suppressing annual Pride marches, which have been effectively banned since 2015.
