Turkey bounced check totals reach 233 billion lira

Data from the Banks Association of Turkey Risk Center shows that the total amount of bounced checks in the first eight months of the year reached 233 billion lira, representing a 56 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

During this period, 223,912 checks belonging to 29,691 issuers were processed as bounced upon presentation. This reflects a 19 percent increase in the number of bounced checks and a 23.6 percent increase in the number of issuers compared to the previous year. Of the bounced checks, 30,826 items valued at 27 billion lira were subsequently paid by 13,872 issuers.

In terms of total check volume, 9.8 million checks from 516,516 unique issuers were processed, totaling 7.483 trillion lira. While the total check amount rose by 23 percent year-on-year, the number of checks and issuers presented saw slight decreases. The cities with the highest amounts of bounced checks were Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, and Bursa.
