Turkey calls for permanent Black Sea maritime safety mechanism
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for the establishment of a permanent mechanism to ensure the safety of commercial maritime transport in the Black Sea. Speaking to reporters while returning from Bishkek, Erdogan emphasized that the priority for Ankara is the security of all civilian vessels in the region, regardless of their flag or operator.
The call for action comes amid concerns regarding a potential grain crisis. Erdogan warned that confrontations between regional actors must not escalate to a point that undermines civilian safety or commercial activities, noting that the resulting damage is expanding.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan previously indicated that Ankara has developed a plan for the safe passage of grain through the Black Sea and is engaged in discussions with both Russia and Ukraine. The issue was also reportedly discussed during a meeting between Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek.
