Turkey cancer experts warn patients of summer heat risks
Medical oncology specialist Doç. Dr. Yasin Kutlu of Medipol Mega University Hospital cautions that high summer temperatures can exacerbate side effects for patients undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiotherapy. He notes that heat‑induced fluid loss, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can intensify, making adequate hydration essential. Kutlu advises patients to drink water frequently throughout the day and to include fluids such as ayran or soup, while adjusting intake for those with heart or kidney conditions under a physician’s guidance.
He also stresses that many cancer treatments increase skin sensitivity to sunlight. Patients should avoid direct midday sun, seek shade, wear wide‑brimmed hats, sunglasses and light‑coloured clothing, and use broad‑spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapplying every two hours. In addition, Kutlu highlights the importance of food safety during hot weather, recommending thorough washing of fruits and vegetables, avoidance of foods left unrefrigerated, and careful storage of medications according to manufacturer instructions.
“With the right precautions, patients can travel, go outside and continue daily activities,” Kutlu said, emphasizing that summer need not be a period of prohibition but of mindful care.
