Turkey celebrates 488th anniversary of Preveze Naval Victory
Turkey celebrated the 488th anniversary of the Preveze Naval Victory and Navy Day with various ceremonies and public events. In Istanbul, a grand naval parade featured 15 vessels, including the TCG İstanbul, the nation’s first national frigate, as they passed through the Bosphorus. The procession included several frigates, corvettes, and two submarines, with crews saluting the Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha Monument and tomb.
To mark the occasion, several naval vessels were opened to the public for visits. The TCG Yıldırım frigate was hosted in Tekirdağ, while the TCG Edincik minehunter was made available for inspection at Erdek Port.
Political and military leaders, including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister of Energy Alparslan Bayraktar, issued messages commemorating the historical victory of Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha. Bayraktar highlighted Turkey’s current maritime energy capabilities, noting that the country now operates one of the world’s four largest energy fleets, including multiple drilling and seismic research vessels operating in the Black Sea and Mediterranean.
