Turkey experiences multiple drownings and water pollution bans
A series of tragic drowning incidents occurred across several Turkish provinces on August 9, 2026, resulting in at least eight deaths. The fatalities were reported in Hatay, Zonguldak, Kocaeli, Samsun, and Şanlıurfa, often occurring despite official warnings and bans on swimming due to adverse weather and sea conditions.
In Zonguldak, Hakan Ergin, a 34-year-old former football player and referee, died after being swept away by waves at Uzunkum Beach. In Samsun's Atakum district, a 42-year-old man, Hasan Voyvat, died while attempting to rescue his 17-year-old nephew, Emir Ulaş Usta, who also succumbed to drowning.
In Hatay's Samandağ district, 13-year-old Mehmet Ali Himyen lost his life after being caught in heavy waves at Çevlik Beach. In Şanlıurfa, a 6-year-old child and a 33-year-old man died in the Euphrates River. In Kocaeli, two individuals died in separate incidents at Kumcağız and Sarısu beaches.
Separately, in Istanbul, a swimming ban was implemented at the Ambarlı coast in Avcılar following water quality analysis that revealed high levels of pollution. The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change identified that the İSKİ Ambarlı wastewater treatment plant had been discharging untreated urban wastewater into the sea, resulting in an administrative fine of 3,343,688 TL against İSKİ.
