Israel strikes Syrian airbase, heightening tensions with Türkiye

Tensions between Israel and Türkiye have escalated following Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in Syria on August 18. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the strikes, describing them as delivering messages through 'kinetic ways' after diplomatic warnings were ignored. Netanyahu stated that Israel intends to establish a security zone in Syria to prevent jihadist incursions and explicitly noted that he does not want to see Turkish military presence moving further south in the region.

Türkiye has strongly condemned the strikes, with UN Representative Ahmet Yildiz calling them a blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Turkish Presidency characterized the military action as illegal. Amidst these tensions, Türkiye welcomed the United States' decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, viewing it as a step toward regional stabilization and economic recovery.

Reports indicate that the targeted airbase was inactive at the time of the strike and contained no military personnel. Meanwhile, disinformation has been circulating on social media, including old footage from 2017 being used to falsely claim a massive current Turkish military deployment in Syria.
