Turkey consanguineous marriage rates show regional variations

Data based on the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) indicates that while consanguineous marriages are showing a declining trend across Turkey, their prevalence varies significantly by province due to traditional and cultural factors.

In the ranking of provinces where such marriages are least common, Tunceli holds the lowest position, followed by Karabük and Ardahan. Other provinces with low rates include Bayburt, Bartın, Sinop, Edirne, and Artvin.

Health experts note that these marriage patterns carry risks of increased hereditary diseases in children, recommending genetic counseling prior to marriage.
