Turkey considers extending vehicle usage limits for citizens living abroad

The AK Party is reportedly preparing a new legal regulation to allow Turkish citizens living abroad to use their foreign-plated vehicles in Turkey for longer than the current two-year limit. Under existing Ministry of Trade regulations, eligible individuals—including dual citizens and Blue Card holders—can keep foreign-plated vehicles in the country for up to 730 days, provided they have resided abroad for at least 185 days in the previous year.

The proposed model aims to address usage duration issues by allowing owners to extend their stay by paying a specific tax for each additional year. While the concept has been discussed within the AK Party Central Executive Board, several details remain unconfirmed, including the exact amount of the tax, the maximum total duration allowed, and whether the fee will vary based on vehicle age, engine capacity, or value.

Following the completion of the draft, the matter is expected to be evaluated by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz before being submitted to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for final political assessment and the initiation of the legal process.
