Turkey cracks down on fake ID and land title fraud

Turkish authorities carried out coordinated raids in Istanbul and seven other provinces, detaining 23 suspects linked to a network that forged identity cards, residence permits and documents for land transactions. The operation, led by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor and supported by the Istanbul Gendarmerie Command, uncovered collaboration with population directorate employees and efforts to sell property using counterfeit titles.

Separately, experts issued a public warning on preventing land title fraud, urging property owners to use the Web Tapu system to add a “no processing without personal appearance” note, activate SMS transaction alerts, regularly check records through e‑Devlet, and limit the scope and duration of any power of attorney. These steps are presented as key safeguards against fraudulent attempts to exploit real estate records.
