Mahmut Arıkan condemns Ahbap Derneği scandals and warns of farmer crisis
Saadet Party leader Mahmut Arıkan used a Konya party picnic to allege corruption in the Ahbap Derneği, saying the charity “took everybody’s money” and that “the bureaucracy and courts are turning a blind eye.” He demanded that the officials – the “çavuşlar” – responsible for overlooking the issue be identified and promised to keep pursuing the case. Arıkan also linked the controversy to recent NATO talks, asserting that Ankara’s messages at the summit were not accidental.
Turning to agriculture, Arıkan told reporters that wheat buying prices of 16.5 lira are far below farmers’ production costs of 19‑20 lira, leaving them unable to stay afloat. He highlighted soaring input prices – fertilizer up 64 % and diesel up 41 % – while product prices rose only about 22 %. He noted that the 2006 agriculture law calls for state support equal to at least 1 % of national income, but the current level is only about 0.25 %. Comparing Turkish producers with Australian farmers who receive strong state backing, Arıkan warned that without policy change Turkish agriculture faces a deepening crisis.
