Turkey criticizes Greek Foreign Minister over military remarks

The Turkish newspaper Turkiye has issued a sharp critique of statements made by Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis regarding the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean. The publication characterized Gerapetritis’s remarks on Greece’s military readiness—specifically concerning the deployment of frigates and modernized F-16 fighter jets—as a ‘scandalous threat’ to Turkey.

According to the report, the Turkish outlet claims that Athens is attempting to compensate for its limited options, caused by Turkey’s stance in the region, by using military power to escalate tensions. The newspaper further suggested that the Greek government is attempting to project military decisiveness while being forced to maintain open communication channels with Ankara.

The tensions also intersect with regional infrastructure projects, such as the €1.9 billion Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) intended to link the electrical grids of Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. The Turkish press noted that these geopolitical frictions impact such developments, particularly regarding subsea cable works near Kasos.
