Israel-Turkey tensions escalate after Syrian airbase strikes

Diplomatic tensions between Israel and Turkey have escalated following Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Idlib, Syria. The strike, located approximately 70 kilometers from the Turkish border, was justified by Israeli officials as a response to claims that Syria is permitting Turkish military presence at the facility, which Israel views as a security threat.

Israeli War Minister Yisrael Katz warned President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against engaging in 'dangerous adventures' in Syria. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's administration has accused Damascus of breaching security understandings. In response, Turkish officials and the Presidency have rejected these accusations as 'frivolous' and 'traps' designed to destabilize the region for political gain ahead of Israeli elections.

Israeli political figures have expressed internal criticism of the escalation. Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Democratic Party leader Yair Golan both characterized Netanyahu's actions as irresponsible and politically motivated, suggesting the tension is an attempt to bolster his domestic standing. Additionally, the Israeli Air Force has moved an Apache helicopter squadron to its northern Ramat David airbase, a move military officials noted was partly prompted by perceived threats from Turkey.
