Turkey deaths reported in separate German incidents
Two distinct incidents involving turkey populations have been reported in Germany. In Brügge, Brandenburg, a fire broke out in a turkey barn on a Thursday morning, reportedly caused by an open gas heater. While police reported that a large portion of the turkeys were rescued and estimated property damage in the low six-figure range, journalist Kilian Dreißig has criticized the lack of specific data regarding the number of animals injured or killed.
In Dornum, Lower Saxony, approximately 6,000 turkeys were culled following a confirmed outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1). The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut officially confirmed the virus on November 3, 2026. The animal rights organization ANINOVA released footage of the deceased birds being loaded for transport, using the event to call for an end to industrial poultry farming. This follows several previous outbreaks in the Dornum region dating back to 2020.
