Turkey defense industry expands to 4,500 firms and $100 billion project volume
Turkey's defense industry has undergone a massive transformation over the last 25 years, evolving from a system of purchasing ready-made equipment to a global ecosystem of high-tech production. According to data from the Anadolu Agency, the number of companies in the sector has grown from 56 in 2002 to over 4,500 today. The total project volume has surged from $5.5 billion to more than $100 billion, with exports reaching $11.2 billion.
This industrial growth is supported by significant increases in research and development, with annual R&D spending rising from $49 million to approximately $3.5 billion. The sector now employs over 100,000 people, characterized by a young and highly skilled workforce.
The technological advancement in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has also impacted regional dynamics. Reports from Greek media outlet Naftemporiki indicate that the presence of Turkish drones in the Aegean Sea has created strategic and economic challenges for Greece. Journalist Grigoris Anagnostou noted that the cost of using F-16 fighter jets to intercept Turkish drones is extremely high, prompting Greece to plan the integration of four French-made UAVs to support its air force starting in September.
