Turkey detains over 200 suspects ahead of NATO summit in Ankara

Turkish anti‑terror police carried out large‑scale raids in the capital and surrounding regions ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for 7‑8 July. Authorities arrested 209 people suspected of links to the Islamic State, left‑wing groups such as the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party‑Front (DHKP‑C), and other organisations deemed terrorist. The crackdown also targeted lawyers and journalists, with members of the Progressive Lawyers Association and the editor of the LGBT+ magazine Kaos GL taken into custody. Ankara’s prosecutor announced a ban on all public demonstrations from 28 June until after the summit.

In a related operation south of Ankara, police killed a man identified only by the initials M.K., who was suspected of direct contacts with ISIS leadership and opened fire on officers. His wife, also suspected of terrorist ties, was wounded and detained. The actions are part of a broader security campaign tied to the upcoming NATO meeting.
