Turkey diesel prices approach 100 TL per liter following recent hike
Diesel prices in Turkey are facing significant increases, with a recent hike of approximately 6.62 TL per liter pushing prices toward the 100 TL threshold in several provinces, including Samsun. This rise is attributed to fluctuations in global Brent crude oil prices, exchange rate volatility, and a scheduled increase in the Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV). The ÖTV on diesel is expected to rise progressively, reaching 6 TL in October, 9 TL in November, and 12 TL in December.
Economic commentators and political figures have warned that these fuel costs will trigger a chain reaction, increasing expenses for transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing, ultimately raising the prices of consumer goods in markets. Additionally, the potential for diesel prices to exceed 100 TL has raised concerns regarding fuel pump infrastructure; industry sources estimate that upgrading approximately 80,000 pumps to display three-digit prices could cost roughly 212 million dollars.
Household energy costs are also rising. The price of a 12kg kitchen gas cylinder increased to 1,570 TL in September, marking a 33.6% increase since the beginning of the year. Industry experts suggest that if current cost pressures continue, kitchen gas prices could approach the 2,000 TL mark.
