Turkey fuel prices face volatility amid diesel hikes and upcoming tax changes

Turkey is facing significant volatility in fuel prices. On September 25, diesel prices saw an increase of approximately 2.55 TL per liter, following a previous reduction. This hike has raised concerns among agricultural and transport sectors regarding rising production and logistics costs.

Looking ahead, a major shift is expected on October 1, 2026, when the 'eşel mobil' tax balancing mechanism is scheduled to end. This mechanism was designed to cushion consumers from international oil price fluctuations by adjusting the Special Consumption Tax (SCT). Without a new government intervention, the end of this system could trigger a record-breaking gasoline price hike of approximately 12.48 TL per liter, driven by the SCT rising from 4.43 TL to 14.83 TL per liter, plus associated VAT increases.
