Turkey doctor advises pregnant women on staying cool during summer heat

Dr. Mehmet Ak, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist at Memorial Kayseri Hospital in Turkey, outlined nine practical measures for pregnant women to lower body temperature in hot weather. He recommends using hypoallergenic sunscreen, limiting exposure to direct sun, staying in shade or indoor cool areas, and wearing light, breathable, UPF‑protected clothing.

Light exercise such as walking, swimming, or yoga should be performed in the early morning when temperatures are lower. Regular hydration, cool showers, wet cloths on the head and neck, and cooling the feet with mild water are also advised. Dr. Ak warns that heat exhaustion and heat stroke can impair blood flow to the fetus, emphasizing the need to avoid heavy exertion and to recognize symptoms like excessive sweating, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat.

These guidelines aim to protect both maternal health and fetal development during the summer months.
