Turkey doctors urge heart‑healthy habits and safe summer sports for children

Cardiologists in Turkey highlighted the importance of preventive measures for heart health across the population. Dr. Bahattin Öncü, a pediatric cardiology specialist at Medicana Bursa Hospital, warned that while increased physical activity during summer benefits children’s cardiovascular development, exercising during the hottest hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) can cause heat‑related illnesses. He advised parents to schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or evening, ensure frequent hydration, and avoid sugary or carbonated drinks.

Separately, Dr. Faruk Aydınyılmaz of Erzurum City Hospital emphasized that up to 80 % of heart attacks could be prevented through regular exercise, a balanced diet, and reduced tobacco and alcohol use. He noted that roughly 300 000 people in Turkey suffer a heart attack each year, contributing to the global figure of 17 million, and urged at‑risk individuals to undergo annual cardiology check‑ups.

Both experts stressed that lifestyle changes and regular medical monitoring are essential to curb the high rates of cardiovascular disease in Turkey.
